The Khan Family Scholarship Fund

My grandmother, God rest her, always spoke fondly of the six whole days of formal schooling that she was able to attend. She forwent food and clothing to make sure her kids could study. We'll never be able to repay her but at least we can honor her.

In 2025, the Khan Family Scholarship Fund was established to benefit orphans and students in need of financial support.

How does it work?
The fund is a subfund of a public ancilliary fund (PAF) administered by Awqaf Australia. Donations are invested through third party fund managers with the returns being used to support my cause of choice. Recipients are vetted and granted by an impartial philanthropy team tasked with ensuring the most needy receive the funding.

We have no control over any part of this process but have full trust in the team after 20 years of knowing them. We don't receive any financial benefit for establishing a fund.

Are donations tax deductible?
Yes. Deductions are 100% tax deductible as Awqaf Australia holds a DGR2 status as a PAF.

What are the admin fees?
Due to funds management, admin and charity vetting being done collectively for over a hundred funds just like this one, Awqaf Australia are able to cap their fees at 3% which is taken from the investment returns.

Why did you set this up?
Salmin, his parents and several members of his family have been the recipients of merit scholarships. We've been fortunate to do well. It's implicit that we give the same opportunities to other young people.

Can I set one up too?
Absolutely. You're able to pick your causes or charities. There is a $10,000 minimum initial donation to establish the fund after which you'll be granted a portal to see returns, collect further donations and get reports on who has been helped by your fund.
